    Roofing Through The Centuries

    Last updated 1 year ago

When we look at things such as roof replacement, we have to look at the broad range of today’s roofing materials, including stone, wood, and the well-known asphalt shingle. These types of roofing all evolved from many centuries prior and have come a long way:

    • When ancient peoples began building freestanding structures, they were often covered with mud and straw as well as local foliage, and sometimes had wood supporting combinations of these materials.
    • The first thatch roofing wasn’t used until around 700 A.D., and was ideal for wet climates. The layers of foliage were laid such that they shed water even during heavy rain, and were used everywhere from the tropics to London.
    • The Greco-Roman times, about 100 B.C.E., saw slate used as roofing. It was some time until tile roofing caught on for widespread use—in 12th century England, a law intended to prevent the spread of fire stated that all thatched roofs should be replaced with tile.
    • In 1600s France, Francois Mansart created the distinctive Mansard roof, with its dual-angled slopes. This was something of a combination of Classical and Baroque influences, and is often seen with dormer windows dotting the lower and steeper slope.
    • While most roofing materials historically depended on what types of raw items were readily available, trade spread certain materials to areas that would traditionally use other components. For example, while clay tiles were widespread, metal roofing was more practical for the southern regions of America between the 1600s and 1800s.
    • Today, the asphalt shingle has come a long way in terms of practicality and durability. With its ability to withstand the elements and attractively adorn your roof, asphalt represents many years of evolution in roofing.

Common Causes of Residential Roof Damage

    Last updated 1 year ago

While your home or commercial roofing is not designed to last forever, it should last at least 10 to 15 years depending on the roofing material. However, there are a number of factors that could dramatically shorten the life of your roof, causing leaks, cracks, and other types of roof damage. Let’s take a look at a few of the leading causes of roof damage that could shorten the life of your roofing.

    Flashing Damage
Flashing is a material that protects exposed portions of your roof. You may find flashing at the outer edges of your roofing, near your chimney, and around plumbing and soffit vents. Flashing damage allows water to enter your roof, increasing the chances of a leaky roof.

    Improper Installation
Roofing comes from manufacturers with specific installation instructions that should be followed carefully by your roofing contractor. If your roofing company doesn’t install the material properly, you’re likely to find that the roof begins to break down much earlier than guaranteed. Poor workmanship increases the risk that your roof will become leaky or wind damaged.

    Poor Maintenance
Proper maintenance prolongs the life of your roof, and poor maintenance abbreviates it. Examples of roof maintenance tasks include repairing wind or hail damage immediately, removing debris from gutters and roofing, and regularly inspecting your roof.

    Weather and Wind Damage
The Atlanta area is occasionally subjected to powerful wind, rain, and snowstorms, and your roof should be ready for seasonal weather. Getting a roof that is rated for high-speed winds will help minimize damage. However, damage from falling debris or hail may be unavoidable regardless of the roof you have. If your roof is damaged, have it repaired immediately to mitigate the cost.

The Various Construction Factors that Determine Your Home's Energy Efficiency

    Last updated 1 year ago

Now that it’s wintertime, homeowners throughout the Atlanta area are buckling down to try and save energy. But despite your efforts to decrease energy consumption by turning off lights and unplugging appliances, you may not save as much as you’d imagine. The most effective way to decrease your energy costs and improve home comfort is by upgrading the building materials in your house. Here are some common examples of energy-saving home upgrades:

    Roofing
Your home’s roof is one of the most important components of its thermal envelope, or the series of materials that protect your home from the weather. Damaged roofing is more susceptible to air infiltration, which allows cold air from outside to enter the attic, decreasing the overall temperature in your home. Roofing leaks may also allow moisture to enter the attic, increasing the likelihood of mold growth, condensation, and rotting. Newer roofing eliminates these issues and will help you stay more comfortable this winter without the high energy costs.

    Attic Insulation
Related to the health of your roof is the health of your attic insulation, a component that helps to slow the transfer of heat between your roof and the air inside of your home. This helps to increase comfort throughout the entire home and reduces your dependence on an energy-guzzling furnace.

    Windows and Doors
Did you know that the typical home loses more than 25% of its heat through its windows? Upgrading your doors and windows will not only enhance the look of your home’s interior and exterior, but will also help reinforce your home’s thermal envelope. High-quality doors and windows provide great insulation and help to eliminate chilly drafts.
